Discussion

Bryan and Laura visited some of the North of England's most unique and interesting architecture on the road trip. Explore the blog to consider the artists' thoughts and comments on Newcastle's Byker wall, Sheffield's cooling towers, and Salford's Chimney Pot Park.  Think of your favourite local or national architectural landmark and then compare and contrast the cultural function and community benefit of architecture to that of a piece of public art.

Activity

On Day 10 at the Byker wall Bryan wrote:

"I was enjoying a bit of architectural tourism on a crisp sunny day, wondering to myself why experiencing unique architecture of the 70s is not as popular as enjoying key movies/albums of the period".

Devise a marketing strategy, event, or activity to encourage the public to engage in “architectural tourism".

Discussion and Activities

In your opinion is 'The Wonderful North' a piece of Public art?
Look at the range of case studies in this section and fully explore the Wonderful North website and exhibition, visit the ‘Exhibition' section of this pack for more information on internet art, and consider; what is public art?

Activity

Visit public art in your local area, consider the site, age, commissioners, artist, function, material, and your relationship to the work, and decide why it's there.

Activity

Identify a place that you feel would benefit from having a piece of public art. This can be for aesthetic, social, or economic reasons.  Go to the Channel 4 Big Art website and use the 'Art checklist' to produce a plan of approach for your
chosen site, work your way through the list and consider the complexities of this process.

After you have worked through the checklist and explored the content and case studies in this section, propose/pitch your site and approach to the group. Your proposal must include your reasons for choosing the site/area, how you propose to
work with artists, whether the work is permanent or temporary, its proposed function, what community engagement will take place, and give a proposed time schedule. (The art checklist is designed for Channel 4 by the Urban Design Alliance
