The three Northern regional development agencies, One NorthEast, Yorkshire Forward and Northwest Regional Development Agency (working together through the flagship economic initiative, the Northern Way) have invested £4.5m into an ambitious public arts programme to improve perceptions of the North and to attract overseas visitors.
The programme, 'Welcome to the North', commissioned Arts Council England to create an innovative virtual gateway to the North of England. A panel of arts curators and digital media experts developed a brief through an online blog which attracted international attention.
Digital media agency Numiko, with artists Bryan and Laura Davies, won the competitive tender with their proposal The Wonderful North, due to a combination of innovative technology and artistic credibility.
Numiko and the artists are advised by a steering group of representatives from the Northern Way, Arts Council England, Yorkshire Culture, and independent advisors in business development, design, regeneration and media.
